NAACP in our Community

Members of the NAACP - Albany Branch participated in the many events that occurred in the City of Albany throughout the month of January. We take the time to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King and remember his "I Have a Dream" speech. It is more important now than ever to remember the fight during the civil rights movement and what Dr. King and others during that time were fighting for. In 2026, we are picking up where the civil rights leaders of that time left off.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Beloved Community March

On Monday, January 19th, members of the NCAA joined residents and city officials in the annual City of Albany march for Martin Luther King Day. The march began at the steps on Madison Ave in front of the NYS Museum and proceeded to the statue of Dr. King in Lincoln Park with a wreath-laying ceremony. This event is free to attend and sponsored by the City of Albany Commission on Human Rights & Office of Cultural Affairs.

Dr. Martin Luther King Celebration at AMBACC

January 19, 2026

The Alice Moore Black Arts and Cultural Center and the Center for Law & Justice hosted a celebration in honor of Dr. King. The community event featured a welcome address from Mayor Dr. Dorcey Applyrs, executive directors from both organizations, a prayer from Pastor Michael Williams, and a wonderful choir led by Mrs. Mitchell. A number of people and local officials attended the event and were able to discuss what actionable steps we would take to make a better tomorrow for us and our neighbors, in honor of Dr. King.
